San Rocco, Istra
Resting on a hillside on the edge of the little town of Brtonigla, the San Rocco encapsulates all that we want from a hotel: beautiful location, relaxed ambience, good food and wine... oh, and a swimming pool... plus a little wellness thrown in. Perfect!
A charming mix of antique and modern, the rooms feature some bare stone-work, many have original beams, the bedding and mattresses are luxurious, the bathrooms are just about perfect and the whole ambience is relaxed and friendly.
The meal we ate at San Rocco was truly one of our most memorable. We've said this about a few restaurants in Slovenia, and we'll say it again about our first in Croatia: why don't the Michelin people bother to cross the border from Italy? Cooking of this standard deserves world recognition and a little stardust would be a useful reminder to a number of restaurants in Michelin Land that maybe they're resting on their bay leaves. Remember this name: Zoran Čobanov (pron. Chobanov), a true Masterchef (where he scored maximum points, by the way!).

In the summer, shorts, frocks, T-shirts, sandals (or sturdy shoes or boots if you're off walking), something warmer for the evenings and something waterproof in case it rains. In winter: wrap up!
More than welcome... but this one's mostly for adults.
San Rocco is open all year.
Summers are warm - July and August are the hottest months, with daytime temperatures around 25C, while during spring and autumn you can expect around 15-20C.
Winters can be rather cold, but the hotel remains very cosy!
